Background: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels.
Many type 2 DM patients do not have knowledge about their disease, including understanding,
risk factors, therapy, and prevention.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between the level of
knowledge with physical exercise compliance in type 2 DM patients.
Methods: This study used literature study through data collection using certain keywords in
databases such as Google Scholar and Pub-med in 2016 – 2020. They were 9 cross sectional
articles and 1 quasi-experimental article. The instrument used by the whole article is a
questionnaire.
Results: There were 10 articles that met the inclusion criteria. Respondents were type 2
DM patients from hospitals (9 articles) and Puskesmas (1 article), adults to the elderly
obtained by random sampling technique (5 articles), total sampling (3 articles), and
purposive sampling 2 articles. There is a correlation between family support and physical
exercise compliance in type 2 DM patients (p=0.000), the correlation between physical
activity and blood sugar levels (p=0.001; r=-0.433), diet and the incidence of DM
(p=0.047), level of knowledge of type 2 DM with diet (p=0.000); DM knowledge level with
physical activity (p=0.006; r=0.446); lack of exercise with type 2 DM (p=0.038); OR=3);
there is an effect of health education on the knowledge of type 2 DM patients (p =
0.000), and there is a difference between the level of knowledge of type 2 DM patients
about treatment of type 2 DM before and after being given health education of ±2.513.
Conclusion: From the 10 articles, most of them found the correlation between the level of
knowledge and physical exercise compliance in type 2 DM patients, although there are
other factors that play a role.
